Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance. In BDD, if a slight physical anomaly is present, the person's concern is markedly excessive. The individual may engage in repetitive behaviors or mental acts in response to preoccupations with perceived defects or flaws in physical appearance. The preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
